![]() ![]() There were parades in the streets demanding independence and freedom from British rule, as well as boycotts of goods from Britain and organized strikes. ![]() This political anger was the first time women could take action in their country. Furthermore, it was agreed that there could be no improvement to the state unless there was improvement to the position of women at the time. In the early 1900s, Egyptian nationalists were all under the notion that independence from the oppressive presence of Europe was the way to move forward. The revolution of 1919 against British occupation in Egypt and Sudan was the first time women participated in such demonstrations. With a resurgence in the feminist movement happening right now in Egypt, let’s take a look at a short history of feminism throughout history in the country.
